Cultivating a Heart for Motherhood- The Obstacles

We started this series at the beginning {a very good place to start} and last week we talked about the significance of motherhood and then discussed it again.  I hope you are enjoying the printables too {week 1 and week 2}!

So we have the big vision, we understand the significance of mothering, but why is it so difficult to live that way in the

mundane-ness of life?

This week we are going to look at 3 big obstacles that keep us from fully embracing our job as mother.  Three things that hinder our ability to see clearly and enjoy the job that we have been given. {I’m sure there are more, but these are my top three!}

The first one is this:

Obstacle #1 – Forgetting to fill up on Living Water

Girls, we need to be in the Word…daily. I don’t want this to be a guilt trip thing, but I do want you to take it seriously. Mothering is going to take every single thing we’ve got, and quite frankly, it is going to take MORE than we’ve got. That is why we need to be in His Word and sitting at His feet every day. We need to feed our children out of our abundance.  SOOO many mamas write to me and tell me they just don’t have time for a quiet time.  And you know what? If you are looking for absolute quiet, you are probably right!! But if you are willing to get creative, I promise that you have the time to fill up on Living Water!

Yes, you ask, but how? My day is already full from dawn to dusk, and I just can’t wake up any earlier.

I realize that during the season of young mothering, it is so difficult to have a “quiet time.”  So, here are some suggestions:

Keep a Bible handy wherever you “hang out” most. Whether it’s next to the nursing chair, the bathroom, the kitchen….wherever you can steal a minute or two. Read a few verses and allow them to speak to your heart. Then meditate on the verse as you go about your work. Say it out loud to your children. Write it on an index card, and keep it with you as you go about your day.

Pray as you cook, or clean, or wipe noses. The Bible encourages us to “pray continually”. And, yes, there will be interruptions, but I dare say that the Lord understands, since He is the One who gave you those interruptions!!

Listen to the Bible online. This is my favorite thing to do. The kids and I listen to the Daily Audio Bible every day. I love it! In one year, we will have listened to the entire Bible! It is soothing and simple.  Try it!

Put on quiet worship music. Choose music that puts you in a calm, worshipful mood. Choose music that helps you express your heart of worship as you sing along. My favorites are; Peace Like a RiverGlory RevealedFernando Ortega, and Seeds Family Worship. I find that all of these minister to my heart and the hearts of my children.

Source: meggielynne.tumblr.com via Joy on Pinterest

Saturate yourself in God’s Word. It will change your mothering. It will change your heart as you seek Him for wisdom for life with little ones.

Give to your children out of the overflow of your relationship with the Lord. Let God’s love pour out, spill out, ooze out, and touch your children’s hearts. Now, go get in the Word!!

Two great resources for studying God’s Word are:

1. Savoring Living Water E-Book

2. Good Morning Girls

Come back tomorrow for Obstacle #2 and Wednesday for #3 and this week’s printable! If you haven’t already, I invite you to subscribe!

What is your favorite way to make sure that you fill up on Living Water? I’d love to hear!

I keep my Bible on the kitchen counter on a cookbook stand…
    Open.
It’s hard to miss and it feels like that’s always where I am :)

I love that Kara. You are always such an encouragement and inspiration to me. Really!

I used tips from Inspired to Action – Maximize Your Mornings. I start my day in His Word and prayer. Don’t get me wrong, many mornings I am interupted but my children are learning that they too must pick up a book and wait quietly for me to finish. (This does not always work out how I have it planned but we are slowly working on it)!!!! I LOVE starting my day this way! I look forward to it!

    • Joy

Love this! I love that you have set those boundaries and encourage your children to respect them! Thanks for the thoughtful tips and your enthusiasm!!

SO, so true!! We need Him to fill us so we can walk in Him – in power and strength (His). I love Savoring Living Waters. Excellent resource! :)

Yes, yes, yes sister. :) I love hearing from you!!

When my kids were infants and still feeding in the middle of the night, I would use my iPod to read God’s Word while feeding them. The lights were out, it was quiet, so I was able to get uninterrupted and peaceful time with the Lord at 3am while feeding my sweet girls. I cherished those times. Now, they are older and sleep through the night (thank you Lord!), so my time with God looks differently. I start by waking up and reading a chapter in the Bible right before I jump in the shower (that way it’s fresh on my mind as I take my shower – which seems to be the most-”quiet” time I get in my day!). Then while in the shower I play worship music on my iPod so that I can sing and praise God and pray for the day that lies ahead of me. Of course, with young children I still have mornings that my shower is interrupted, but hey, God knows…He gave me those little blessings that come calling my name while I’m spending time with Him. Then during homeschooling we have Bible class…I, too, learn and am fed as the simple truths of Scripture are being poured into my kids little souls! Then afterwards, we have worship music and/or Bible on CD playing in the house. At bedtime we have family worship time where we read Scripture together and sing and pray together as a family. So, I (as well as my family) infuse God’s Word all throughout our day. I love God’s Word…I love the God I find in the Bible…He truly is Living Water.

    • Joy

Megan, Wow. You are an inspiration. I love how you have made this such a priority in your life! And I’m with you in being thankful for nights that you get to sleep straight through! Thank you for giving us a picture into your routine! I am sure you have encouraged many ladies!!

  • Jennifer

I get my “quiet” time first thing. My son has gotten used to the idea that he has to play quietly or watch a show without distracting me so that I can have my Bible study time (maximize your mornings and good morning girls group studies) I have been making time every morning for almost a year and it only took him a couple of days to figure out what was going on. And I like that he gets to see me spending time with God and in the word…that way he is learning that it is important.

    • Joy

Jennifer!! Way to go! I am so impressed that you have been consistent with this training and routine now for almost a year! That is awesome! Thanks for sharing….it is so encouraging to hear from you!

  • Shonda Knowlton

I am absolutely loving your series. So simple, yet so powerful. I have been writing on my printables and making copies of your posts so I can read them over and over. You are so encouraging. I do have my quiet time every day, but I really want to extend that out to ALL day! I am a Good Morning Girl, but I would also love to check out Savoring Living Water. Thank you for sharing this series!

    • Joy

Shonda, Thank you so much, dear one, for the encouragement! I know that I have been re-learning a lot from this series myself! :) Yay for GMG!! I am loving the Ephesians study!!

  • Janine Rosche

Great tips! I am especially excited about the Daily Audio Bible!

    • Joy

You are so welcome! I hope you love it!!

  • Gina Benson

Love this series Joy. Thanks for the encouragement!
I unfortunately get to spend very little time with my boys. I own a private language school here in Italy, where I live, but my heart aches to stay home and be with my boys :( I am constantly “trying” to be intentional with my time and pour into them. I am thankful to you for reminding me that it’s going to take me being “full” of Him in order to effectively pour into them!

    • Joy

      Gina,
I hear your heart. :) I am sure you must have a difficult time trying to juggle it all. I am praying for you even now, that those times of intentionality with your boys would be sweet and God blessed. Take care and hang in there!!

  • JoLynn Holmwood

Wow! It’s like you jumped inside my mind and wrote what I have been thinking and feeling for the past 2.5 years as a mom!! Incredible. It’s immediately uplifting in that I know I’m not hte only one with these struggles. I am so encouraged. Thank you!

    • Joy

Yay! I’m so glad that I’m not alone!! :) I am so glad that we can all learn and get refreshed together. Thanks SO much for joining me here!!

Joy, you are so right–motherhood is a job that requires us to be filled up! So often I think I can keep chugging along on half-empty, but my joy overflowing is so much better! I’m sure you’ve read “Shopping For Time” by Carolyn Mahaney…that was also an encouragement to me…and my prioritizing the Word each day.

    • Joy

Yes! I love Shopping for Time. I really do need to make a resource list for people to use for this series, huh?! That would be a great one to add. Thanks for saying hello! Thanks to you I am re-reading Feminine Appeal and sleeping with my hair in a sock! :)

A dear sweet friend of mine wrote a post on her blog a week or two ago about this very same topic. She offers some great tips and insight which I believe she got off of another blog (mentioned in her post). Check out Jess’s post at http://www.themcclenahans.blogspot.com/2012/02/are-you-finding-that-quiet-time.html. Jess has been through so much and writes with such genuineness and honesty – you will be encouraged!

As for me, this has been on my heart for quite some time~daily being in the Word of God-reading and studying and applying It, praying, and encouraging other ladies to do the same. Then, the Lord directed me to the Good Morning Girls website somehow. Soon after, the idea of a BLOG accountability group came to fruition where a group of busy moms/women are holding each other accountable to be praying, reading and studying the Word of God daily! I cannot even tell you how much this has encouraged me and the other ladies involved and how much it creates that sense of accountability. May I encourage any who read that they can do the same…just start it up (whatever “it” may be…your own personal quiet time, a weekly or monthly Bible study, an accountability group, whatever), invite a a spouse, a friend or group of friends to hold you accountable, and watch the Lord work. Praise God for what He is doing in our own little group!

Thanks for this series, Joy, I have been finding it very encouraging and challenging!
    Kim

    • Joy

Thanks Kim! I am off to read your friend’s post. I am sure it is great!! Thanks for telling us about your accountability group, that sounds awesome!! Have a great day!

  • Thezipfs

By the way, my quiet time comes very early in the morning (right after the treadmill) and with the Good Morning Girls study…I pray over, read and study a few verses (I think maybe 4 verses is the most you do) at a time but get to think on those few verses throughout the whole day and try to digest as much of those verses as possible. The study happening now is the book of Ephesians, written by Paul and with Paul going very deep sometimes, a few verses is all this little brain of mine can handle among the chaos of life. ;)

Hi Joy I was wondering if you could recommend to me a good mom / women’s devotional? I have only 1 devotional and I really need something that will involve me more in the Word but also be allow me to finish reading it before I am interupted by my babies. Thanks so much in advance! Blessings!

We worship together as a family on Sunday… and play many of the same songs via our itunes or in our car during the week… it’s a powerful perspective to have Jana Alayra videos (instead of rock band) weekly… I LOVE that my boys can recite the lyrics to these songs of faith AND

Hi Joy, I have just recently found you and am so grateful. I decided to do this study even though its a past one. I am encouraged already! I was at a women’s conference last April and the speaker was Debbie Griffith (everyday matters @ debbiegriffith.com) and she shared her idea of her “manna book” she has a small notebook in which she takes a verse and writes it out, pausing at words or phrases to meditate and hear what God is saying to her and writing that down as well. Helps to memorize verse and get word into heart as well as hear from God. Its been a great tool!! Its simple, but puts you into concentrating, not just reading and it really does “fill you up”. Thanks Joy, thanks for letting God use you in so many ways through Gracefull mamm!!
