Refresh Your Soul Series 2013

The electricity grinds to a stop again. The dog next door yelps endlessly, the blaring m@sque somehow still has it’s electricity, and the heat without fans leaves me a melty puddle on the floor.  The scheduled power outages are no problem, the ones I know are coming. It is these never ending, sneak-up-behind-you-in-the-middle-of-the-hot-day-ones that wear me down. Just a few hours before, in the cool pre-dawn, fans were going, and coffee was piping hot, I was refreshed and feeling spiritual. Now, with kids arguing about the nothing they-think-is-the-end-all-something, the laundry is piled high and stinky, ugly words bubble up from deep inside of me and threaten to unleash on the next waiting victim. I am pooped.

My soul is weary.  It needs refreshing {maybe yours does too?}. Not just the kind of refreshing which involves pedicures and long lengthy luncheons, or my ultimate fantasy right now, sipping a Starbucks walking down the aisles of Target {hey, I am easy to please!}. No, it needs something more than a passing moment to truly refresh. A little pampering can certainly be part of it, but I need more.

The new year has begun, and all things are new and the year holds scads of possibilities. Will you join me in a series to refresh your soul as we take on the year?

A little space to pause, think intentionally, and renew and refresh some of our habits.

Beginning next Monday, and continuing through the month of January let’s find true refreshment in Him and in setting up some simple habits.

Week 1- Creating Space To Breathe/Refreshing Your Quiet Time

Week 2-Planning for Refreshement/Refreshing Your Habits

Week 3-Refreshing Your Space/Delighting in God’s Beauty

Week 4- Refreshing Your Mothering/Letting Go of Distractions

I am all about simple and do-able {who has time for more?!}, so each week there will be a devotional, a challenge, and some  action points.

I hope you will join me for a time of refreshing.

Tell me: What area in your life needs refreshing?

Yes, yes, yes! It is so very easy to feel spiritual when it all seems “right”, but so very easy to lose sight of truth when it all seems so very wrong. Especially unscheduled power outages!

    • Joy

Yes Patty. You say it so well. And then that makes me think about how my security or kind attitude is dependent on my circumstances, when it should be on His strength and not dependent on anything going right at all. :) Glad to have you joining me.

Good Morning, Joy!! I want to tell you how much your post meant to me this morning and how much I am looking forward to your series. I am a minister’s wife, mother of six kids (8 and under), and expecting our 7th blessing in a couple months. My husband just went through heart-surgery in mid-December. With the pregnancy, his health, the holidays, and life with a big family, I woke up this morning thinking, “God I don’t even know how to start this New Year. I want so badly to start it with You, but I am so exhausted. I just need You to restore my soul.” And I was thinking about the verse that talks about times of refreshing that come from His Presence. Then, I walked over to my computer and saw your post and just about burst into tears. Thank you for your openness and vulnerability, and for sharing. You have completely blessed the threshhold of 2013 for this mother, and I thank you from the bottom of my heart. Praying He richly refreshes and blesses you this month, even as you are sharing your heart, and His, with others. As you know, those who refresh others are themselves refreshed!! :)

    • Joy

Oh Elizabeth, you bring me to tears and bless my heart.
Lord, I pray that you would refresh Elizabeth today. Bring her Your peace, Your strength, and Your love to her heart today. I pray that You would use my bumbling words during this series to bless her heart and soul, Dear Father. We love You, Lord.
I am glad to be on this journey with you, Elizabeth.

So excited for this series! God has been working on my heart in some of these same areas! I wrote a little series a month or so ago on truly being refreshed and revived past the pedicures and remote beaches! :) Looking forward to some more insight!! http://www.walkdownmain.com/2012/12/relaxrefresh-and-revive-part-1.html

    • Joy

I love that we have the same idea of refreshing! When I get a chance I will head over and read your series. :) Thank you.

I am definitely in. I need some reflecting on all 4 areas. I am excited about this. Looking forward to it. May God bless you as you share from His heart and yours.

    • Joy

sorry to hear that Brooke. I hope this series will encourage your heart. Hugs and prayers to you from across the world.

  • Jackie

Let’s go! I am praying for a job change in 2013 to be at home with my children. I feel like I am at that “cliff” of stepping off into new territory of completely and wholly trusting God will take care of our family financially. He is our great Provider!

    • Amy Yoder

I am in the same season, Jackie. It is great to know God has our back and that He wants the best for us. Blessings.

      • Joy

I love to hear both of your hearts. Yes, Amy, God does want the best for us, and it is so refreshing to remember that especially when we step out into unknown territory! :)

I am not a mother. I am a 24-year-old trying to make meaning of my life (pursue a career, find the right guy, etc.) But I am looking forward to this!

    • Joy

I am so glad you will join us!

Sign me up! I am really excited about this and need this so much! Thank you for doing this, Joy. I went to bed last night feeling not ready for a new year — wishing that I was feeling refreshed, but in many ways feeling weary. The area I most need refreshing in is my vision/perspective for ministry, both as a mom and as our role serving in our host country (I’m totally with you on the heat of the tropics wearing you down!). 2012 was a challenging year with chronic health problems, homesickness even after living here for almost 5 years, and loneliness. Hoping to find my rest and refreshment in Jesus this year!

I would love to join you! And i can totally relate! I live in Indo too and have loved reading and keeping up with your blog! I laughed out loud when i read about your ultimate refresher in the aisles of Target! My husband and I are going to the States for 5 months in a few weeks and that was the first thing i said i wanted to do! :) Its so nice to “meet” you on here! Maybe we can meet face to face one day on one of these beautiful islands! Thank you for being such an inspiration!

I’m so excited you are doing another series! I have been reading “Unglued”, which is about imperfect progress versus perfection. This will fit in perfectly with what I’m already doing. Can’t wait! As a stay at home mommy of a toddler and 6 year old, I’m in need of some refreshing in all areas.

  • HomeschoolontheCroft

I’m not 100% sure what you have in mind, but I am totally sure I need it!

    All of the above. :)

Thank you for this post! It really convicted me of having some refreshed/focused time with the Lord as I enter into 2013. While 2012 was nothing short of amazing blessings for my husband and I, including a cross country move and a new job, I am convicted that I must rely on the Lord once again. I must remember that He is the one who carries me through things!

    • Joy

Wow, you had a full year! Yes, I am convicted as well, and I am looking forward to walking this journey with you!

  • ~Amanda

Yes, yes, yes! I need refreshing in the mundane. The day-in day-out sameness of home life with a husband and 6 little ones. Your ultimate fantasy sounds mighty fine to me! Looking forward to this series. Thank you!

Hi Joy – thank you so much for these blogs! Wanted you to know I linked to them a few times in a post I did today – just wanted to share. Also, could you possibly come back to this page & update the lists with links to the blogs themselves? I have directed people to this page & it would be really nice if they could come & then just click through to various posts. If thats too much work, I completely understand :)

Grace on you & your husband!
