Restoration

During one of our long 8-hour power outages, I moved slowly in the blackness feeling for the front door to push it shut and click the lock.  Unbeknownst to me, the cat was caught between the door and the screen, and there he stayed sandwiched the whole night through {poor thing}.

I opened the door in the morning to find a frustrated feline along with the remains of a screen door scattered everywhere and a huge gaping hole proclaiming my mistake. And each day since, the gash is there announcing to me and all visitors that I need someone to come and fix it. Someone to come and pick up the pieces, fit a new screen, and fill the hole.

I am feeling a bit like that screen door.  Things long held secret coming into light bring pain and leave me feeling like bits of me are scattered everywhere. I have a vast hole, and although mine is hidden away and not as easily seen, I am in need of Someone to come and fix it.  I need Him to pick up the pieces and fill it.

Thankfully, that is the business He is in.  Restoration.

I know that He has it all under control, that He isn’t surprised, and He makes all things new. And it is right there in that word, Restoration.  I can’t be restored by striving for it, trying to fit the pieces back together, fitting in my own screen door. I can, however, be made new by resting in Him, resting in His plan for my life, resting knowing that He works ALL things together for good.

And so I rest.

“Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” Matthew 11:28

How about you?  Are bits of you scattered everywhere and you need Him to fill the hole? Maybe you could whisper a comment and we could lift each other up in prayer to the Master Fix-it Man? Will you join me in His work of Restoration?

 ”He whose heart is kind beyond all measure, gives unto each day what He deems best, Lovingly it’s part of pain and pleasure, Mingling toil with peace and rest.” – Lina Sandell

    Somehow never saw the “rest” in restoration before now. Thank you for these words!

      You are welcome. :)

    Thank you for sharing this. I definately feel scattered everywhere lately. Thank you for reminding me that rather than praying about it waiting impatiently and anxiously for everything to get worked out, I need to rest in Him and allow everything to fall into place in the way that is His plan, not mine. I will be praying for your RESToration.

    I wish I could give you a big hug friend. I can so relate, since I have been on a journey of restoration for quite some time. It isn’t always easy when we want it to feel better and get fixed quickly and yet, like you said, we have to rest in the arms of the Savior.

    I will be praying for you, that the peace that passes all understanding will guard your heart and mind right now.

    Love you!

    Yes! And I need the Master Repairman!

    Thank you.

    This is a lovely post! Sometimes restoration takes a while, but God is so good to allow us to rest in His arms.

    • Joy

      Yes!! It certainly can take a long while, I am so glad that the Lord is patient with me!!

  • Annette

    Beautifully said, Joy! Trusting that God is in control, even in the midst of this world’s wickedness and chaos, takes real spiritual maturity. You are looking very like Jesus – in our weekness He is strong!!

    Oh Joy… have been (and will keep) praying.
    Restoration and redemption…

    This is one of my favorite “rest in Him” poems (from Annie Johnson Flint)–

    He giveth more grace when the burdens grow greater,
    He sendeth more strength when the labors increase;
    To added affliction He addeth His mercy;
    To multiplied trials, His multiplied peace.

    When we have exhausted our store of endurance,
    When our strength has failed ere the day is half done,
    When we reach the end of our hoarded resources,
    Our Father’s full giving is only begun.

    Fear not that thy need shall exceed His provision,
    Our God ever yearns His resources to share;
    Lean hard on the arm everlasting, availing;
    The Father both thee and thy load will upbear.

    His love has no limit; His grace has no measure.
    His pow’r has no boundary known unto men;
    For out of His infinite riches in Jesus,
    He giveth, and giveth, and giveth again!

    Loved hearing from you Joy. You are so tender, transparent and encouraging. Yes, I feel a constant need to rest in Him, abide in Him and take refuge in Him…nonetheless I often try to do things on my own only to, once again, realize that I’m in need of HIM!

  • Jennifer

    Yes. I was just telling someone the other day that very verse is the one I’m clinging to right now. So very weary. Love you!!

    Thank you for these words as always. I was reminded yesterday of some old scars I thought were now invisible, and my husband got to see pain that he’s never seen in my eyes before. It just reminds me of the situations God has delivered me from in the past and how powerful he is in helping us to forget those traumatic situations. I will be praying for you.

    Restoration is a theme in my life that never leaves. I am so thankful for that! I want to always be brought to a place of surrender, and submission before the Lord. Thanks for being real:)

  • Broken

    Struggling today with forgiveness….restoration of our marriage after my spouse’s infidelity, how to forgive when I can’t yet trust, how to love past the unlovely mess. Your post was sent to me by a friend. I plan to read and re-read throughout the day as I see He who can teach me to forgive.

    • Anonymous

      Hello Broken, just came across this blog and read your post. I know what you are going through and I’m so sorry for the pain you are carrying right now. You probably feel like no one understands… But, God does! He knows how it feels to be betrayed, so he will comfort you! Your husband can not heal your heart, only the Lord can do that work.
      Believe and Decide that you want to forgive, this decision will bring forth a journey that will solidify your faith. It will give you a brand new outlook on God’s grace & love for us! Replace satans lies with Gods truths; 2 Cor. 10:5 We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God(his truth for your life and marriage), and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.

      Trust is a separate matter and it’s something that will take time! But, forgiveness is something you can decide on right now, and it’s also something God can help you through. “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging. Psalm 46 1-3.

      Will be praying for you!

    Sittin in a coffee shop wondering what is wrong wih me…pulled up your blog post and realized it’ restoration I’m longing for. I’m trying to give myself permission to be broken. Permission to be weak and weary when I feel like I have so many depending on me. Some darn cat left a gaping hole in my spirit and I’m going to give myself time to seek restoration. Thank you for your words of grace!

    After 3 years of crisis after crisis after crisis . . . our family is deeply in need of restoration. The Lord has done a miraculous work in our marriage, but we still have a lot of pieces to put back together in broken relationships with our young adult children. Please keep us in your prayers …

    In a certain area of my life I feel like your cat–caught or trapped between a door and another door. So I wait on God to open the door. Thanks for your great insights. I will try to rest in Him today!

    Joy,
    Thank you for your open heart and words that speak encouragement when so needed. The Lord is working through you in amazing ways. So thankful that we can rest easy in His care, although the easy part is the tough one to hand over. Praying for peace and rest for our souls today.

    Oddly enough our screen door was in such terrible shape from a raccoon we finally took it down. We need a new one and are finally having it installed to get a breeze during the summer. I also think I could use a bit of restoration myself!

  • sarah

    I’m always in need of restoration! Life seems to be a constant struggle for me. I struggle to love my family and be patient with them, be disciplined, to focus on Jesus instead of my own inadequacies, not eat too much, exercise enough, not compare myself to others…… the list goes on. Each day I am faced with my failures and weaknesses, thankyou for this wonderful reminder of just coming to Him and resting in Him. Praying for you today. May God bless you and surround you with His loving arms. Please do keep sharing honestly with us, it really helps to know that you are just like me and that we are all in this together.
