The 3 C’s of Mothering- Continual, Competent Teaching

The 3rd C is Continual, Competent Teaching!

I know how it is when you have little, little ones.  You don’t want to say it out loud, but some days are just downright bo-ring.

Not that there isn’t plenty to do, there is.  There is cleaning, doing dishes, making meals, and of course, the changing of diapers, ad nauseum.  And all of the sudden, the glow of motherhood meets reality and you’d give anything for something exciting to change up the routine, right?!

I remember when Britton and Hannah were little, I would think up some item that we needed from Target, and then bundle everyone up, just to go and cruise the aisles with a popcorn and a big Diet Coke.  Is that wrong? No, not at all!

Sometimes, though, we WANT to be intentional mamas and we just need some good ideas on how to fill our day! And so, here are some simple ways to teach your kids all throughout the day.

1.  Bible Teaching- let His Word be always on your lips.  This can be done formally and informally.  ”You shall teach them diligently to your sons and shall talk of them when you sit in your house and when you walk by the way and when you rise up and when you lie down.”  Deut. 6

2. Read, read, read! Go to the library, fill up a big bag, and have fun!

3. Arts and crafts

4. Cooking (yes! have them help you in the kitchen!)

5. Nature walks

6.  Chore Teaching- setting the table, folding the towels, counting out silverware, pouring water

7.  Manners Teaching- make it game, asking to be excused, saying please and thank you

8.  Speak up- teaching them to speak up for their faith from a young age

If you incorporate each of these things into your day, in say, 30 minute increments, add in meals and a nap or two, and you have your whole day planned! These are not things to add burden or stress to your day, but just some simple ideas to teach your kiddos all day long!

I love your honesty and wonderful suggestions! I had little guidance as a new mom and felt so inadequate , but think I’d be overwhelmed today with so many resources and things to try. I really don’t remember being bored! Life was busy and full each day and I prayed a lot to love my family and trust God to provide what we needed. I’m convinced simplicity is the key .

    • Joy

Thank you Judy. I totally agree with you that simplicity is key, which is why I only listed one or two things for each topic! I certainly hope that is wasn’t overwhelming to others, I don’t want anyone to feel like they have to do it all, but if they are bored, that they might find something fun!! Thanks for commenting, I always LOVE to hear from you!!

It’s funny Joy .. I now think up reasons NOT to go to Target! Crowds, queues, traffic, children confined in their car seats. All these factors added up and produced tired and irritable children – my desire to ‘get out of the house’ essentially backfired because I now had to deal with those tired and irritable children when we arrived home and make dinner, get the house back in order etc. Today I love staying home and part of that was an overhaul of my attitude in seeing the work I did there in a different light. I stopped calling household tasks ‘chores’ and one strategy that worked for us when we needed to get something big done was a ‘family working bee’ with every family member involved? What you choose to do and how often you hold a working bee at home is entirely up to you. You know you can clean windows with water pistols? It’s a lot of fun! Even weeding which I don’t enjoy that much is much less boring when a child brings you a frog he has found and its highly entertaining when mom leaps up and runs at breakneck speed from the garden shrieking ‘snake’ ! Which is what happened to me just last week when I almost sat on a sleeping python! We always make sure there is some kind of reward for hard work such as a trip to the ice cream parlour or fish and chips for supper. I think these will be the experiences my children will remember and talk about and not our trips to Target!

As a mom of Littles these are some great reminders. I am a big fan of reading, playing outside, and incorporating real life training with my kids. I also habit train them, which I believe is really helpful. I also think listening to and responding to music is vital for little kids! (I have a post about that on my blog). Thanks for the all the links… I know what I’ll be doing the next few minutes. :)
